Com got these deluxe newly remodeled suites at Schlitz Park. We got crummy old building with a leaky roof, and the basement of a section of the giant Square-D Building. At least they gave us bulletproof glass at Square D, but I had to hike around the block to take a shower in some other office that was renting there. There was no shower curtain.

A quick shot out of the window as the plane departed Milwaukee. Just look at that place. Can you say winter ugly? It's no wonder upper midwesterners want to flee in droves every winter. Things looked a lot more welcoming as we touched down in Phoenix.

First Ride

John and I after the first ride of the season. A casual ride on the commuter bikes to the St. Vincent's to look for cheap, used cameras. John found a dual lens Olympus that day for just a couple of dollars. Several APS cameras were there too. I'll need to go back to see if I can get one of those to relace this Canon Elph that produces the softest images ever.

So that's the Good. Beer cooling in a snowbank outside the door to my office building. Yum. We now have a full size fridge so the snowbank won't have to stick around through summer. Still might though. This is Wisconsin.

"Oh, and next Friday... is Hawaiian shirt day... so, you know, if you want to you can go ahead and wear a Hawaiian shirt and jeans."
Yeah... that's the Evil. No shit, tomorrow is hawaiian shirt day at my office. Unbelievable. I thought the place was cool but... Maybe I'll knock down some cubicle walls tomorrow, have some coffee at Chotchkie's and work on the cover sheets for my TPS reports.

Things I don't miss

This time of year, winter is the #1 thing I don't miss. While it can be beautiful, the cold here sems endless. This is the first of several amazingly unsharp photos that I took. I think it is time to retire the aps elph and find something new. Maybe a used $2 aps at the local St. Vincents.

Scott had the very good point that a graduated neutral density filter would be useless on a rangefiner camera since one does not look throught the lens like on a SLR, so you could not line up the horizon properly to darken the sky. So I should get used to white skies on my shots winter time. Oops, maybe a polarizing filter would do it. The point is moot, however; it's neither here nor there so to speak, since this is the APS camera forum, not the rangefinder camera forum. Maybe I could hold a piece of smoked glass, or a filter over the front of my APS camera. Anyways those white skies in my photos bother me.

I think this was window light only, but I'm not sure. They were having trouble with the machine at the minilab when I had this developed, thus the marks on the picture. Some of the other prints were worse. I had them re-do one print. The roll was $8.60 one-hour before I pulled out the duds, only $2 something after. Not bad. makes me want to get a Canon APS SLR.

Power

The power station in Port Washington is about halfway through a transformation from coal to natural gas power. Most of the old brick power plant is now gone along with the two towering smokestacks. The western facade is about all that remains. WE Energies had tours shortly before the initial demolition began. The old plant was beautiful inside with details they would never include today. Adios to that! The new plant is rather ugly in my opinion. Ah, well. The space used to store the coal will become public land so hopefully something cretive will be done with that.

Fire Station, Port Washington, WI. This format worked well here. Too bad pano crops the negative rather than using two full negatives to get the same effect. Too bad about the flare as well. That's got to be the worst I've ever had.

Dang! I hate it when the tools get left out too long. (this is not in my yard) At first I thought this was a neglected rotary lawnmower but it isn't. It's some kind of a wheeled bag thing. Maybe for hauling leaves? I have no idea. It just appeared one morning in a friend's front yard and there it sat after the snow fell.

Back In The Office

Well the weather in Florida was nice but it's back to Wisconsin for me. Here's the typical mid-January view from my cube. The bus company across the street serves most of the Milwaukee schools. I see buses coming and going all day long. The windows and walls of the building I am in are not particularly well insulated but having a view to the outdoors is a worthwhile tradeoff for the cold hands and feet in the winter.

Great movie. I felt like I was in it when taking this picture. A couple of sales guys, on the road, in a convertable Mustang. Now all we need is to rip the door off at a gas station, lose some M&M's in the dash and toss an unconscious deer in the back seat. That would be AWESOME!

Strangest thing but native Floridians don't put the top down when the temp is in the low 60's F. We stood out like sore thumbs.

The land of concrete bridges

There is a huge bridge connecting St. Pete to Tampa. This was taken from somewhere along the middle, headed back to the Tampa airport. I managed to fly into Tampa, see customers in St. Pete and Largo and get back to the airport and I only traveled on 4 different roads. Pathetic frankly. Sunny and mid-60's though compared to mid 20's back in Wisconsin. If you look closely you can see that the rental car was perfect for a sun starved northerner.

My brother Steve took this shot with an APS SLR camera called a Minolta Vectis S. His wife made and sold greeting cards from macro shots, mostly of flowers, that Steve took with his Vectis S. Steve said that the Vectis had outstanding light metering capabilities. He unfortunately sold the Vectis along with all his other film cameras when he switched to digital.

Wack-Job on the Trail

I threw this print in the garbage when I first saw it. The next day I was looking at the APS index print and noticed it looked pretty cool as a thumbnail, so now I kinda like this shot.

I was running this trail, The Ozaukee Interurban, a few years ago before it was paved, when I saw a giant deer. It was the size of a horse I swear. Deersquach. I have not seen it again, but a few days later I was running on this same trail when a woodchuck jumped out in front of me and would not let me pass! I had to run around it! It's home is paved over now I guess.

You can't see how big this hill is from this shot up near the top, but if you have seen it, you would appreciate how hard Scott worked pushing Matthew up the hill several times. Matthew and his sister Danny got into a sled and sped down the hill into their mom. She went down like a bowling pin.

It has becom brutally obvious that photo blogs are made for digital cameras. I feel sort of pigeon-holed on this APS forum thing. It's a camera that takes lower quality shots with film that is more expensive to have developed. That's a combo that does not insipre lots of picture taking. My sis flew up from Atlanta this weekend and I mentioned the APS forum and she said she had an old APS camera at their place. I told her she could be my southern correspondant. Bring a new flavor to the forum. We shall see.

Rebirth

We are back in business. John found this nice Canon Elph at the Plymouth, WI St. Vincent thrift store. $3.99 is the right price. Seems to be fully functional but the first roll of film will be the real test. Now if I could just get that roll that has been sitting in my jacket pocket all week developed, we'd really be getting somewhere...

DEAD

Two more dead rolls reveal the horrible secret. APS Forum's first post was not a fluke. John's Kodak is dead. Too bad because there were likely some memorable shots on there from the new year's eve Ale House run in Milwaukee as well as many others. This cuts in half the number of cameras currently available to the forum. Hopefully there will be an inexpensive flea market find in the near future so the breakneck pace of posting can continue.

Purchased new in 1996? 2X zoom and beautifully small. The pop-up flash needs to be manually popped-up these days and the lens cover no longer closes. Despite these two issues it's an attractive, durable, metal camera.

Here is a good look at them if you've never seen anything but 35mm. Best feature: foolproof drop-in film loading. Worst feature: reduced negative size.

John's Kodak 3600ix

The lens on this gem retracts flush to the body when it is off. Of course it only extends 1mm out when the camera is on. I'm really not sure what they were thinking when they designed that feature. This camera does have one of the brightest flashes I have ever seen on any point & shoot camera.
